The Lure of the Labrador Wild by Dillon Wallace
"It's always the way, Wallace," Hubbard implored his friend. "When a fellow starts out on the long trail, he's never willing to quit. It'll be the same with you if you go with me to Labrador....". So began the improbable collaboration between an ambitious young writer, Leonidas Hubbard, and forty-year-old New York attorney, Dillon Wallace. They set off in the late spring of 1903 with George Elson, an Indian guide with no first hand knowledge of their destination - the incompletely mapped Lake Michikamau region of interior Labrador. Beset by delays, the men paddle past their intended route, the Naskaupi River, and head up the dreadful Susan River instead. When in early September they finally glimpse the vast waters of Michakamau from atop an unknown mountain, the cold winds have already begun. With almost no food left the three begin a desperate struggle against starvation and the quickening pace of a cruel winter, heading homeward in a race for their lives.

Hopedale, Three ages of a community in Northern Labrador by Carol Brice-Bennett
"This is a wonderful book. Carol Brice-Bennett combines a deep love for the people of Labrador and a passionate concern for their future with an extensive knowledge of their past. Hopedale is a microcosm of Labrador: her history of the community and its people is an important addition to the Labrador canon. And it's a joy to read, in the bargain."

Woman of Labrador written by Elizabeth Goudie
Originally published in 1973 and now a Nimbus Classic, Woman of Labrador is Elizabeth Goudie's enduring and candid story of her pioneering life as a trapper's wife in the early 1900s. She was left alone much of the year to rear eight children while her husband worked the traplines, providing furs for their meagre income. Independent and resourceful, Elizabeth fulfilled multiple roles as homemaker, doctor, cook, hunter, shoemaker, and seamstress for her growing family, who provided companionship during long winters of isolation in her husband's absence.
